Christopher Watkin is my first guest on Heroes of Agency. With a reputation for being a little outspoken about the agency industry, and a vocal critic of proptech if it doesn’t solve a real problem, Chris is a well known personality on property social media channels, especially LinkedIn, where he hosts his weekly PropShow and has interviewed everyone who’s anyone in the residential property business.
He is a prolific video producer. At the time of filming he has created and published nearly 700 videos on the topic of lettings and estate agency in under two years, including several interviews with yours truly, and as well as being a ghost writer of property market reports for agents, has also begun offering training sessions to agents who want to find out how to film and edit video content for their own marketing purposes.
It was Chris who was partially responsible for the idea of me starting my own video series, so it seemed only right to make him the first guest. And what a guest! This is a deep-dive conversation into Chris’s story. We start with gruesome tales of work in the Watkin family butchers at weekends as a kid, what he learned from it, and his journey through university, surveying, banking, corporate and franchise agencies and his decision in 2013 to become his own boss and start helping other agents.
The interview gets deeply personal in places, Chris opens up about the time he was dressed as a girl and got mistaken for one, family relationships, redundancy, what that did to his sense of self worth and much more. So let’s crack on and get started. Thanks, I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed recording it.
